District of Columbia - National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP)

This section explains about the eligibility criteria of one who wants to become a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) in the District of Columbia.

Eligibility for Employment as a CNA

To be a CNA in Columbia, you must have been issued a CNA certification by the Columbia State Board of Nursing.

Eligibility for NNAAP® Testing

All candidates applying to take the NNAAP Examination in District of Columbia (DC) must complete an Application for Registration by Competency Examination online at www.credentia.com/test-takers/.

You must pass both parts of the examination within a two (2) year time period to be a part of the DC Nurse Aide Registry. Candidates are permitted three (3) attempts to pass the exam. After a third failure, you must complete another Nurse Aide training program and submit another application for examination.

Eligibility Route

D1

You have completed a DC Department of Health approved training program within the last twenty-four (24) months and are not currently listed on the DC Nurse Aide Registry or on a Nurse Aide Registry in another state. You will be required to attach a copy of your training certificated during the application process. 

D2

You have completed equivalent practical nursing or registered nursing “Fundamentals of Nursing” course with a clinical component in the USA.

D4

You have trained as an RN or LPN outside the United States within the last thirty-six (36) months. Attach a copy of your foreign Credentia certification. You must attach a CGFNS report that confirms you were trained as a nurse in your home country. Enter 99910 in Section 4 of the application.

D5

You are taking the NNAAP® Examination for re-application to obtain a current certification after it has expired less than twenty-four (24) months ago.

Light Duty

Candidates are prohibited from taking the Skills Evaluation if on limited activity or light duty due to medical reasons. Candidates must be able to complete required skills included in the Skills Evaluation. Candidates on light duty cannot take the Skills Evaluation; however, they can take the written/oral exam. Medical documentation stating return to full duty is required to take the skills evaluation.
